Local conditions
Cholsey's housing stock spans roughly two centuries, and each era brings its own weaknesses. These are the ones that affect joinery.
On the newer estates the internal walls are frequently plasterboard fixed to blockwork with adhesive dabs, leaving a void behind. Fixing a loaded wardrobe into that void alone is asking for it to pull away.
We locate the blockwork or studs, fix through to solid material with the correct length of fastener, and where a wall genuinely cannot carry the load, the unit is built to bear on the floor and simply restrained at the top.
The typical Cholsey bedroom is a reasonable rectangle with a 2.4m ceiling and a freestanding wardrobe that stops at 1.8m. That leaves around half a cubic metre per metre of run doing nothing but collecting dust.
Building to the ceiling with a top box for seasonal storage recovers it. In a standard three-metre wall that is usually a third more usable storage from precisely the same floor area.
Solid-walled cottages in the older part of the village can suffer condensation on cold external walls, especially in bedrooms behind furniture where air does not circulate.
Built-ins on those walls are held off the masonry, ventilated at top and bottom, and finished so both faces of every panel are sealed. It costs a little more in material and stops a wardrobe becoming a mould trap.
Thin MDF skirting, opened mitres, hollow-core doors and architrave that does not line through are common across Cholsey's development housing, and they undermine an otherwise well-kept home.
Replacing trim and hanging solid doors correctly is comparatively quick work with a disproportionate effect. There is no six-week build lead time on second fix, so it is often the first thing we do while a fitted furniture order is in the workshop.
