Ipsden is a scattered parish at the foot of the Chilterns, farmhouses, flint and brick cottages, converted agricultural buildings and a small number of larger houses set in their own grounds. There is almost no uniform housing here, which is precisely why so much of the work is bespoke. Nothing off a shelf fits a room in a 200-year-old farmhouse.

Chalk downland, older solid-walled buildings and converted agricultural structures create conditions you simply do not meet in a town.
Farmhouses and cottages here were built by eye with local materials. Walls bow, openings taper and ceiling heights change across a single room. Ordering standard carcasses for those spaces produces gaps that no amount of filler hides.
Everything is measured on site at multiple points, drawn to the real dimensions, and built with independent scribe panels that absorb the irregularity. The furniture stays square even though the building is not.
Barns, annexes and outbuildings often swing between cold and warm rather than sitting at a steady temperature. Solid timber panels in that environment cup and split if they are fixed rigidly.
We specify stable cores where movement would show, allow proper expansion at panel edges, and seal every face in the spray shop so moisture cannot enter through an unfinished back.
Flint, rubble infill, soft lime-bedded brick and old timber frame can all appear within the same wall. There is no way to know from the surface which one you are drilling into.
We test as we go and adapt, battened subframes to spread load, resin anchors where needed, or a design that carries weight through the floor and only uses the wall for restraint.
Buildings on the edge of the downs take more wind-driven rain than sheltered village housing, and outbuildings are often the first to show it around eaves, verges and flat roof junctions.
Where roofing work is part of a project, hand-cut roofs and GRP resin flat roofs are built with proper falls and detailed edges. Internally, joinery on exposed elevations is kept off the wall face and ventilated behind.
