Local conditions
A historic town centre in a river valley, with a lot of altered period housing. These are the recurring conditions we design around.
Henley's riverside location means noticeable seasonal humidity change. Solid timber doors and panels move with it, and joints that were closed in winter can open in a wet summer.
The answer is specification rather than hope: stable engineered cores where movement would show, solid timber used only where it can move freely, sealed faces on every panel, and door gaps set for the range rather than the day of fitting.
In a Georgian room with a high ceiling and original cornice, a fitted run that stops slightly short, or a panel rhythm that does not relate to the window, looks wrong immediately even to an untrained eye.
We set out to the room's own geometry, aligning tops to cornice lines, panel widths to window centres, and reveals to existing architrave depths. All of it is resolved on the CAD drawing before it becomes an expensive mistake in timber.
Narrow streets, controlled parking and tight Georgian stair turns limit what can physically be delivered into a Henley townhouse in one piece.
Access is assessed at the site visit and designed into the build. Units are made in sections that clear the tightest point in the route, then assembled and levelled in the room so the joints do not read.
Many Henley houses have been reworked repeatedly. You find a modern stud wall against an original lath and plaster partition, three generations of skirting profile in one house, and floor levels that step between rooms.
Rather than pretending the house is consistent, each room is set out to its own datum and transitions are handled deliberately at thresholds, so the new work reads as intentional rather than as a compromise.
